Job Overview:  

Our client is hiring an experienced Tax Manager, Senior Tax Manager, or Tax Director as they build the next line of leadership in Phoenix, Arizona. 

This role is ideal for a tax leader with strong public accounting experience who enjoys working with small business clients, managing complex tax files, leading a team, and building long-term client relationships. 

You will handle a mix of hands-on tax work, review, staff coaching, and client management, while helping drive projects and workload across the firm. 

Responsibilities: 

Tax Compliance & Advisory

  • Prepare and review corporate, partnership, and individual tax returns (1120, 1065, 1040, 1041, 990, and 5471 filings). 
  • Support multi-state filings and related planning for small business clients.
  • Provide tax planning and advisory support for owner-managed and small businesses. 
  • Handle complex tax engagements and troubleshoot technical tax issues.

Client Relationship Management 

  • Maintain and deepen relationships with a portfolio of small business clients. 
  • Attend new client meetings and lead ongoing relationship touchpoints.
  • Communicate clearly with clients about timelines, deliverables, and expectations. 
  • Act as a trusted advisor, offering practical guidance, not just compliance work. 

Team Leadership & Coaching 

  • Coach and mentor junior and intermediate staff on tax, accounting, and file prep. 
  • Review staff work for accuracy, completeness, and quality. 
  • Help allocate work, manage deadlines, and keep projects on track. 
  • Support a culture of learning, accountability, and strong client service.
  • Maintain strong project and workflow management

Project Management & Workflow

  • Manage multiple engagements at once, especially during peak tax season.
  • Keep jobs moving by coordinating priorities, due dates, and resources. 
  • Ensure files are completed on time and to firm standards. 

Tools & Systems

  • Work with tax and accounting software (QuickBooks, UltraTax, Canopy or similar). 
  • Maintain accurate documentation and notes in firm systems. 

Requirements:

  • Significant recent experience in public accounting serving small business clients. 
  • Strong working knowledge across 1120, 1065, and 1040 returns.
  • Comfortable handling both complex technical work and review responsibilities.
  • Proven experience managing client relationships and leading staff. 
  • Solid project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple files.
  • Strong communication skills with a friendly and professional approach. 

Experience: 

  • Ideally 10+ years of progressive experience in public accounting for the more senior levels (Manager / Senior Manager / Director). 
  • Demonstrated success working with small business clients under US GAAP. 
  • Experience attending client meetings, explaining results, and handling questions. 

Preferred Education/Certifications: 

  • CPA is preferred, but strong public accounting experience will also be considered. 
  • Additional tax courses or certifications are an asset.
